Výskumný ústav zváračský (original name) was founded in 1949 as the state organisation on the initiative of Prof. Ing. Jozef Čabelka, DrSc., the Nestor of welding in former Czechoslovakia. In 2003 it was privatised by the association Priemyselný Inštitút SR (Industrial Institute of Slovak Republic) and it changed its name to Výskumný ústav zváračský – Priemyselný inštitút SR (VÚZ – PI SR). The role of VÚZ – PI SR is to provide research and development activities, services in welding and allied technologies oriented on the support of development of industrial production. Major activities are focused on: Research and Development of: - weldability and other properties of materials and their joints, - welding consumables, - technology of welding and related processes, - machines and equipment, - evaluation of reliability and life time of weldments and welded structures, Education of: - welding specialists, - welders and personnel for brazing/soldering of metals, - welders of plastics, - specialists for non-destructive testing, Certification of: - welding and NDT personnel, - manufacturers of steel and welded structures, - products, - management systems, - environmental management systems, - safety and health protection management systems. through certification bodies, authorised and notified body, inspection body, Authorised National Body – ANB and Authorised National Body of Certification Companies – ANBCC, Engineering services: - testing in accredited laboratories, - expertises (failure analysis, etc.), - renovation and repairs, - approval of welding procedures of materials, - creation of application software, - thermal cutting of materials, - heat treatment of materials and weldments, - vibrational treatment, Production: - welding consumables, - machines and equipment, - weldments, welded and brazed/soldered structures, - castings, - surface coatings.
